In love.

The first time he saw her he thought she was way too pretty to be playing a criminal.
Indeed, she was the cop. She was way too pretty to be the detective too, he was one and he wasn’t even half as pretty as she was – later she would have told him that he was so beautiful and so shiny in her eyes that she thought he must have been an actor too.
She kept telling him how she was an actress and how he should have been more polite and kind and nice to her, he didn’t really care about all those things, but he slowly started to realized he wanted to see her smile, he wanted her to be happy.
When they ended the movie and they had to part ways the wind was warmer and the sun was softer on their pale skin; the first days of spring had come and the flowers were in bloom.
Lee Hyuk blinked and for a brief moment – the moment of a blink, of a heartbeat – he thought he had known her already, he has seen her somewhere before. It’s right there, that instant, he realized he was in love.

Eun Tak died twice.

Eun Tak died the first time on a winter night.
She wasn’t even born yet her life had already ended. It was the cruel and unmerciful fate given to her by the divinity, a divinity that kept looking humanity from above, never far away, but never too close. She had been saved by the merciful hands of a lonely goblin, the very same men she ended up falling in love with, the very same man who changed her life completely.
Eun Tak died the second time on a winter day.
This time it was her choice, it was her sacrifice. Someone called her an angel for what she had done, for the choice she had made, Kim Shin only asked her why. The answer was in the eyes of those children she had saved, it the warm arms of their parents who had realized what could have happened if she hadn’t been there.
But she was. And it was her choice.
When Eun Tak died, she died in pain, but she also died in peace.

The lonely goblin

He tries not to cry, but he fails. Miserably.
The Grim Reaper looks at him from the sofa in the living room, but he dares not speak. He feels guilty, he should have seen that coming, he should have prevented it. They both know it wasn’t possible. It still hurts.
Kim Shin makes it rain for days, it rains so much that for a while Wong Yeo is afraid the world will be flooded by the goblin tears. It doesn’t happen. The world keeps spinning and turning and living. They die every die a bit more, yet they keep going on with their lives.
It doesn’t rain as much as before, not anymore, but the way Kim Shin looks at the sun is still unfitting, it makes everyone sad. It’s on the day of the first snowfall that he smiles for the first time after months, no one knows why, but everyone is relieved.
Kims Shin doesn’t say a word, he just sits there, with a book in his hands, his eyes closed and he waits. And he smiles. And he hopes.

The one who remembers, the one who hopes

It’s been nine years.
He never once stopped to talked to Kin Sun nor to Eun Tak. He had not been blessed with oblivion, but it’s better this way. He doesn’t want to forget, he wants to remember everything.
Every smile, every tear, every laugh, every mistake. He never wants to forget anything else, never again.
He sometimes checks on them, it’s just to control if everything is all right – at least that’s what he tells himself; he never speaks, though, he never takes off his hat, nor he let them see him and when it happens he’s so casual and random that they never notice him.
He misses them more than everything, the warm friendship he had formed with Eun Tak, the soft and sad smile Sunny used gave him, the memories, the pain, even Kim Shin.
There is a part of him, a small hopeful and somehow naïve part of him, that still believes that they’ll be all together again one day, on the first day of winter, during the first snowfall when the wind gets colder and love warms their hearts. He dares not admit it, he knows it’s still impossible, but he is still dreaming of a happy ending.

the first snowfall

The first snowfall has come and passed.
Winter howls and the snow covers Seoul, it’s bright and soft and cold, and Eun Tak loves it more than anything else. She’s not sure why, but she loves the snow. Her mother used to tell her how it was snowy outside when she was saved, when the miracle happened. It was winter back then too. Maybe that’s the reason.
Otherwise she can’t understand why she loves so much watching at the big snowflakes falling from the sky, shining in front of the street lamps.
Sometimes she dreams of a field of flowers, lightened by a dim street lamp, when she was younger and life seemed easier, when she was happy. Snowflakes fell from the skies and stopped mid-air. In the dream, she hears a voice and she knows it, and she knows those words.
Every moment I spent with you… shined. Because the weather was good, because the weather was bad and because the weather was good enough.
She wakes up with tears in her eyes and a shattering sense of loneliness. She cries.
But, in the end, it doesn’t matter, she still loves the snow, she still waits for the first snowfall to arrive and when it passes she doesn’t really know what she wanted to happen.

Lacrime
