Once upon a time in a land below the sea lived thirteen sisters -
"WAIT, THIRTEEN?"
Yes, I said thirteen. Merfolk are a very prolific race. Anyway, those sisters were known as -
"Were they all women?"
Yes, yes, let me go on with the story.
Once upon a time in a land below the sea lived thirteen sisters, they were all beautiful, despite their differences in both character and aesthetic. They were known as the Rubies of Atlantis and belonged to one of the oldest household of kingdom of the Triad: the house of the night.
They were - all of them - well known by the other merfolks and, despite not being always the smartest, they were highly respected and loved by everyone. Their actions and their bravery were greatly admired in Atlantis and many remembered the war they so bravely fought against the vile usurper who had tried, many times to conquer the land.
“Were they fighters? Or mermaids? I don't get it".
They were both. They were, as a matter of fact, the last warrior mermaids, heirs of a long lost lineage of fighting merfolk. There were only four households who still preserved, among their members, the ancient blood of the original supernatural progenitor: the house of the night, the house of the sword, the house of magic and the house of the wings.
Today we are going to talk about the Ruby house of Atlantis.
Their red banner swirled into the water, moved by the abyssal current; it was deep heavy red, and that crimson colour was the sign of their house. Crimson as the blood of their enemies, there was a stone painted with a lighter shade of red, it represent, in fact, a Ruby.
The shiny gem had a very peculiar story, born in the abyss and retrieved by the mermaids.
“Can I hear that story?”
This is the Mermaids story, but if you insist I shall speak briefly about the Ruby.
Many years ago, no wait, more, let me start again.
Many centuries ago, before the land was shaped as we know it and before the sea was inhabited by the Merfolk, a powerful God ruled the land. No one knew his his name, they said he was called Chaos, and that he was the one who brought the ancient tradition of the Clash to life, no one knows for sure as - of course - no one was there, no one was even alive.
This powerful God created the Land who suddenly came to life, and from the Land emerged the Water a powerful Goddess born from the energy within the planet; legends said she fed on light sun and Chaos’s love, but those were supposition. One thing was true, Chaos fell in love with her and he was ready to leave this mortal realm and transcend existence with Water.
But something he had not expected happened, Water fell in love with the Land.
Chaos wept, his tears were flames of fire that crushed on the planet like bullets of destruction; his wept created the currents and his screams born the wind.
In the very end, he took his own heart off his chest and threw his red pumping own heart into the ocean; in the depths of the sea, it turn to stone and became a gem, the red shiny Ruby of Legend.
Many years later a young mermaid called Tabata, now the oldest one of the Princesses of the house of Ruby, managed to retrieve the Ruby that had been lost for years. No one had seen it for two hundred years, not after the Queen, Vesper the Indomitable, the bearer of the Gem, the twilight of the Abyss, found it first, giving birth to the lineage and founding the House of Ruby. It was a powerful Gem, filled with the hopes and dreams of many merfolks and humans.
Ah, the humans, you should have heard the stories they told about this gem: so precious and so big, crimson red, yet the brightest and clearest gem you’ll ever find, so thick it could break a diamond, so light you could easily wear it. They used to embark in huge expeditions amongst the seas to find it, not a single one of those ships nor their crew ever come back.
“Did they die?”
Of course they did, can you picture a human fighting a deep abyss creature? Because that is where the Ruby was hidden, in the lair of the Kraken. Only Vesper the Indomitable was brave enough, fearless enough and strong enough to fight the monster and not only survive, but also defeat it.
The water was filled with crimson blood as she struck one final (fatal) blow, the agonizing creature screamed and its voice echoed in the depths of the sea, filling everyone with a sense of doom and despair. After a while Vesper emerged, holding the Ruby, entering the legend.
“And what about the sisters? What about that Tabata mermaid?”
Oh, you mean her heirs? They were born many centuries later, and, as I said before, they were thirteen sisters. All of them were pretty and clever and gifted with a special power; as they were born the Water blessed them, remembering and honouring their ancestor. It was a way of showing the House of Ruby that the old legends were still living and that the old creatures still remembered them and what their House had done to retrieve the ancient Gem.
“So they did find it once again? When? How? Where had the Ruby gone to?”
My dear boy, the Ruby was stolen and it went lost for many years, after the Bloody War of the Four Houses, it took great will, wisdom a quite some bravery to retrieve it. Tabata did most of the work, fighting the other Houses, going on an adventure, but her sisters followed her, bringing along their strength, their virtues and powers. It was a long adventure, and once again the red Ruby of the legend was found.
But, little one it’s a story for another time.
Now it’s time for a good little merboy to sleep.
